Temporary Registration


Graduates of Traditional Universities

Applicants are required to submit all documents listed in the list of Requirements

In addition to the List of requirements for Temporary Registration and the IELTS exam is required from individuals whose:

    Native language is NOT ENGLISH

    AND

    Language of instruction at the Medical University/College is NOT ENLGISH



Graduates of Non-Traditional Universities

In addition to the List of requirements for Temporary Registration and the IELTS exam is required from individuals whose:

    Native language is NOT ENGLISH

    AND

    Language of instruction at the Medical University/College is NOT ENLGISH

Also, applicants must demonstrate success at either one of the following examinations:

and the University must be listed in the World Health Organisation Directory of approved Medical Institutions. Only then can the applicant be considered for Temporary Registration.


Summary of Requirements for Temporary Registration

Temporary Registration is provided for applicants who possess a Medical Degree from a Traditional Medical University/College and successfully completed Internship/Housemanship, but who does not fulfill the requirements for Full Registration. Usually, Temporary Registration is issued for a period of one (1) year. 


Applicants are required to WORK for three years at Approved Health Institutions as a pre-requisite for Full Registration. This means that a Temporarily Registered medical practitioner will be required to re-new his/her Temporary Registration on a yearly basis.







Re-Newal of Temporary Registration

Required documents for Applications of re-newal for Temporary Registration where the applicant worked for entire registration period:

  • Completed Consultant Evaluation forms from each consultant that supervised the applicant's performance during the current Registration period.
  • A fee of Eight hundred TT Dollars ($800.00). This is a non-refundable fee.
  • Completed Temporary Application forms.

For applicants of re-newal for Temporay Registration where the applicant never worked: 

  • Official Letters from the Regional Health Authorities that he/she initially applied to, stating employment status. 
  • Valid Job offers from any Regional Health Authority. These letters must explicitly state that the applicant has been successful is securing a job and the date of assumption of duties.
  • A fee of Eight hundred TT Dollars ($800.00). This is a non-refundable fee.
  • Completed Temporary Application forms.

Deadline to submit all documents for re-newal is 3:00pm the Monday before the next scheduled Regular Monthly Meeting.



Where the applicant is unable to secure employment at the time of re-newal, then he/she will be provided with a Permission-to-Practice letter allowing for the practice of medicine for a maximum of three (3) months. During this period the applicant is expected to sincerely pursue legal employment opportunities.


If an applicant did not maintain employment throughout the entire Registration period, then for the period that he/ she was legally employed, the applicant must submit the completed consultant evaluation forms and a letter from the employer explictly stating the dates when the applicant's employment status changed.


The seven member Council has sole authority to grant re-newal of Temporary Registration. The period granted may also vary, based on the applicant's performance during the evaluation period.

Academic License

The Academic License is provided to applicants who wish to pursue post-graduate education at the University of the West Indies. Since one of the requirements of post-graduate training is being employed in Trinidad & Tobago, this type of registration is restricted to only these type of applicants.

The List of requirements for the Academic Registration is the same as that for Temporary Registration plus a letter from the Educational Institution where the applicant is to pursue post-graduate training. The Letter should state that the applicant has been accepted into the course of study and it should state the duration of the training.

Special Temporary Registration

Special Temporary Registration is available to medical practitioners who can supply all items in the List of Requirements and who intend to practice medicine in Trinidad & Tobago on a short-term basis.

Usually, these professionals are invited by other interest groups or members of the Medical Board of Trinidad & Tobago, to assist in surgery and to temporarily complement the current medical staff of public and private institutions.

Once all relevant items are received, including the non-refundable application fee and completed application form with photographs,Special Temporary Registration can be granted immediately without approval from Council.

Please note that the insurance organisation that provides mal-practice coverage must be applicable to claims made in Trinidad & Tobago. The Medical Protection Society (MPS) or Medical Defence Union (MDU) coverage are the only acceptable medical insurance agents.
